Visa holder loan FAQs

Common questions from visa holders applying for a loan through Payday Advance NZ.

Can't find what you're looking for? Contact our team

We accept the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV), legacy Essential Skills Work Visa, Partnership Work Visa and case-by-case Post-Study Work Visa and Specific Purpose Work Visa. Your visa must have at least 13 months remaining at the time of your application. Student visas, visitor visas and working holiday visas are not accepted.

Yes. The AEWV is the most common work visa we see and is accepted by lenders on our panel. You need at least 13 months remaining on the visa, stable employment through your accredited employer and verifiable NZ income.

Yes. Car loans are one of the most common purposes visa holders apply for. A vehicle is often used as security against the loan which can reduce the rate. Apply through our main visa holder loan application and tell us you want it for a car purchase. Read more about car loans.

Applying for a loan does not directly affect your visa status or any current visa application. Immigration NZ assesses visa applications based on immigration criteria, not your borrowing activity. However, taking on debt does affect your financial position, so we recommend being clear about what you can afford to repay before committing.

Yes. Partnership Work Visa holders are accepted by lenders on our panel as the visa allows work for any employer. The same requirements apply: at least 13 months remaining on the visa, employed in NZ with verifiable income and a clean or near-clean credit history.

Not in most cases. Lenders on our panel assess your application based on your own income, employment and credit profile rather than requiring a NZ-based guarantor. A guarantor may be useful in specific situations such as a limited NZ credit history, but it's not a standard requirement.

We run a soft credit check during our assessment which does not appear on your credit file or affect your score. Once we match you to a lender, some accept our soft check while others may run their own standard credit check as part of their process. We will let you know before we submit.

Yes. You must have regular NZ-based employment income paid into a NZ bank account. We are not able to help visa holders who are self-employed, on a benefit or without verifiable NZ income.

Personal loans for visa holders can be used for most purposes including car purchase, home renovation, debt consolidation, relocation and settling-in costs, medical and dental expenses, and travel.

The minimum is $3,000 and the maximum is $250,000 depending on the lender and your personal circumstances. Loan terms range from 6 to 84 months.

Unfortunately not at this stage. Lenders on our panel require a minimum of 13 months remaining on your visa. If you are in the process of renewing your visa, apply once the renewal is confirmed and your new expiry date is at least 13 months away.

Your loan obligation continues regardless of your visa status. If your visa expires you remain responsible for repaying the loan. This is one reason lenders require at least 13 months remaining when you apply. Always plan your loan term with your visa duration in mind.

It depends on your situation. Some lenders require a minimum period of NZ-based employment and a NZ credit history before they will lend to visa holders. The longer you have been employed in NZ and the more established your NZ credit profile, the stronger your application will be.

A NZ credit history strengthens your application significantly. Lenders assess your NZ credit file, not your credit history from your home country. If you have been in NZ for a period of time and have managed credit responsibly here, your chances of approval are considerably better than if you have just arrived.

No. Your passport is the primary identity document required for visa holder loan applications. A NZ driver licence alone is not enough on its own as we need to verify your visa details, but if you have one it can be used alongside your passport.

Not all NZ lenders will consider visa holder applications. Many banks and mainstream lenders decline outright due to residency requirements. Payday Advance NZ works with a panel of 20+ vetted NZ lenders and matches your application to those who specifically cater for employed visa holders with stable NZ income. One application, one soft check, and we do the matching for you.

A broker and introducer fee of up to $1,500 applies when your loan is successfully funded. This fee is added to your loan amount and is GST inclusive. It is disclosed clearly before you commit to anything and you are never under obligation to proceed. Lender establishment fees may also apply depending on the lender.

Visa holder reviewing loan options through Payday Advance NZ

Can visa holders get a personal loan in NZ?

Yes. Personal loans are available to visa holders in New Zealand, though not all lenders accept non-residents. Many mainstream banks decline visa holder applications outright, and those that do accept them may offer limited products or less competitive rates. Specialist non-bank lenders are generally more willing to work with employed visa holders who have a stable income and a good credit history.

Payday Advance NZ works with lenders on our panel who specifically cater for visa holders. We match you to the lender most suited to your visa type, employment situation and loan purpose, giving you access to options that may not be available if you apply directly.

What visa types are accepted?

Lenders on our panel accept the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV), the legacy Essential Skills Work Visa and the Partnership Work Visa. Your visa must have at least 13 months remaining at the time of application. This requirement reflects the lender's need to ensure the loan can be serviced for a reasonable period before visa renewal becomes a consideration. Visa categories and durations are defined by Immigration New Zealand.

Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV)

The AEWV is the main pathway for skilled migrant workers in NZ since it replaced the Essential Skills Work Visa in 2022. It's typically issued for two to three years and is tied to an accredited employer. Lenders on our panel are comfortable assessing AEWV holders provided employment is stable and at least 13 months remain on the visa.

Partnership and open work visas

Partnership Work Visa holders and other open work visa holders allow work for any employer in NZ. These are generally viewed favourably by lenders as they're not tied to a single employer, reducing the risk of income disruption if your employment situation changes.

Visas not accepted

Student visas, visitor visas and working holiday visas are not accepted at this stage. Post-Study Work Visa and Specific Purpose Work Visa holders are assessed case by case. If your visa is in the process of renewal, apply once the renewal is confirmed and your new expiry date is at least 13 months away.

One application through Payday Advance NZ reaches lenders who specifically accept AEWV and other work visa holders. We run one soft credit check that does not affect your score.

What can a visa holder use a personal loan for in NZ?

Visa holder loans can be used for the same range of purposes as standard personal loans. This includes car purchases, home renovation, debt consolidation, medical and dental costs, relocation and settling-in expenses, and travel. Tell us what you need the loan for and we'll match you to the lender best suited to your purpose and profile.

What do lenders look for in a visa holder application?

Lenders assess visa holder applications against the same core criteria as resident applications (income, employment stability, credit history and existing debt commitments) with two additional factors specific to visa status. The first is visa duration remaining, where at least 13 months is the standard threshold. The second is NZ-based employment income, paid into a NZ bank account, which gives the lender a verifiable record of cash flow.

A NZ credit history strengthens your application significantly. Lenders assess your NZ credit file rather than your credit history from your home country, so the longer you have been managing credit responsibly in NZ, the stronger your application. Recently arrived applicants can still apply, but options may be more limited.

How to apply for a loan as a visa holder in NZ

Applying as a visa holder through Payday Advance NZ takes about five minutes. You will need your passport (not a NZ driver licence alone), your visa details including visa type, number and expiry date, three months of bank statements showing your regular income paid into a NZ bank account, and details of any existing loans or debts.

We run a soft credit check during our assessment which does not affect your score. We then match you to the lender on our panel most suited to your situation and contact you with your options the same day in most cases. You are under no obligation to proceed until you are happy with the offer.

Payday Advance NZ is operated by the same team behind Lending Room, one of New Zealand's most trusted loan brokers with over 1,060 reviews on Trustpilot. The same lender panel, the same service standards and the same commitment to finding you the best deal.
